Hello, I'm Rosalynd!
I am a fine artist with a First Class BA (Hons) in Fine Art and over seven years of experience working in oil painting, with a research-led practice centred on surrealism, psychology, and the uncanny. My work explores dream logic, symbolism, and narrative through traditional painting methods, focussing on my own experiences through life. I combine studio practice with public engagement, mentoring, and freelance commissions, and I have just had my first solo exhibition as part of my artist residency at Newcastle College.
What is a modern surrealist?
My art is a continuous reflection of my experience going through life. As someone who suffers from anxiety, depression, OCD and PTSD, I have always found my brain hard to understand, which comes with struggling to articulate what I am thinking and feeling. Historical surrealism aimed to unlock the unconscious mind through the creation of art to discover your true self, and so I do the same as a modern surrealist. I want the audience to come away reflecting on themselves and their lives, as well as opening their mind to the struggles of others.
How do I make art?
Using thin layers of oil paint, I create surreal landscapes on canvas where a female figure is the centre focus. My work uses flowing brushstrokes, personal symbolism, and has an isolating feeling as the female figure is often alone in the expansive dreamscape. There is often the suggestion of movement, like I am painting a snapshot of a scene, which creates an environment of chaos. I begin with an image shown to me by my unconscious mind, then I ask myself why I have drawn it. Then, it becomes a painting that develops as I work on it; my work is a journey of the mind and my experience as a human.
Paintings v. Drawings
My drawings are usually made very quickly and in a mindful way. Not all become paintings, or they may become paintings at a later date. They are a great demonstration of how I try to capture what my unconscious shows to me as fast as possible.
